This is the single piece of advice that distinguishes the regulars whose homes look spotless from the ones whose homes look fine. It costs you 20 minutes per visit and approximately doubles the visible result.
The 20-minute reset
- Clear surfaces (5 min). Kitchen counters, dining table, coffee tables, hall console. Anything that doesn’t live there permanently goes back where it belongs. We can’t deep-clean a surface buried under post.
- Floors clear of stuff (5 min). Shoes, bags, laundry, kids’ toys. We can’t vacuum what we have to first move ourselves.
- Beds made — or stripped (5 min). Either way works. What slows us is half-made.
- Bathroom: clear the surfaces (5 min). Bottles back in the cabinet, towels back on the rail, bath mat hung up.
What we do with the time you save
Twenty minutes of tidying redirects to: skirting boards, behind/under furniture, light fittings, deeper appliance cleaning, mirrors and glass to a higher standard, picture frames. The “extras” that make a regular clean feel like a deep clean.
